The SD Gecko is a passive adapter that plugs into the memory card slots (the EXI bus), and exposes an SD Card over it. It uses the fact that the EXI bus is very similar to SPI, plus the fact that SD Cards natively support SPI. Due to this inherent compatibility, SD Geckos are incredibly cheap and simple to make.
